Today’s WINning Touch Blog Post is brought to you by WIN Blog Contributor, Genet Jones. Thanks Genet for giving us some great tips for writing about our businesses!

When you are writing for your business, you probably want to write about, well, your business. But whether you’re writing Facebook posts or an email to a potential client, your business isn’t really what your audience wants to read about.

But wait, you’re thinking. How am I supposed to tell them about my business if they don’t want to read about my business?

Good question. The answer comes straight from Dale Carnegie: “The royal road to a man’s heart is to talk to him about the things he treasures most.”

Every chance you get to write about what your clients or customers care about, do it. Do you provide a service for pet owners? Write about their pets and their relationships with their pets. Does your target market love football? Your business may not have anything to do with football, but those potential customers are going to listen when you talk about the Super Bowl.

Now that you’ve got them listening, you can talk about your business just a little bit. Tell those pet owners how your service will make life better for their furry friends. Remind those Super Bowl fans that your widget will save them time so they can watch more football.

Just remember: it’s not about you, it’s about them. While this can be a hard shift to make (because you’re also focused on the things that matter most to you, like your business), it has a couple of huge benefits. The first, of course, is keeping your market engaged. The second is that when you start with your customers’ interests in mind, it gets a lot easier to find new and engaging ways to promote your business.
